Born Great

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 . Swami Vivekananda was earlier known as Narendra or Naren. From his very childhood, he showed sign of greatness. He had great courage, great intelligence and greater wisdom.

He was a gifted child with a sense of love and fellow-feeling for everyone around him. He was equally concerned about the animals and plants. On many occasions, he showed a presence of mind that even people older that him could not have easily shown. Naren was born ‘great ‘!

Rightly, it has been said that coming events cast their shadows beforehand. This was always the case with Naren even when he was a school-going boy and late on USA, where he was virtually treated as an ‘Uncrowned King’. He was not the one to run away from any difficulties or danger, whatever the cost maybe. It was this extraordinary boldness and determination that won him respect from one and all.

Even as a young child, Naren was always engaged in some activity or the other. He was an ever restless spirit. In the words of the great seer, Sri Aurobindo, “His spirit was like a sea of living fire!”

In later years, talking to his disciple, Mr. E.T. Sturdy in England, Swamiji had said, “In my childhood, I used to observe an inexhaustible energy arising in me, overflowing my body, as it were. I used to become restless and could not keep quiet.”

A follower of Vedanta, he was a deeply spiritual being. He poke as though his was the voice of God! He was always speaking of love and universal brotherhood. In the language of the poet, Sri Aurobindo, he was,

“ A foster child of beauty and solitude,
A brother of sunshine and sky!”

It was this sort of spirit that won him friends even in foreign lands. When he uttered just five words in the Parliament of Religion at Chicago, on Spetember 11,1893 it created a stir. He said,

“Sisters and brothers of America”

An audience of seven thousand stood up and cheered him loudly for full three minutes. It was the result of his atma shakti or the inner strength.

He was a great lover of the Upanishads. A worshipper of Shakti his message was,

“Everything is within you, you willed it and it appeared before you.”
Swami Vivekananda has rightly been hailed as the Prophet of Divinity. He may as well be called the Prophet of a New India, a resurgent India!
